Farewell to JJ

The ladies of Foxhills bid a fond farewell to JJ from Foxhills Golf services on Wednesday 7th July.

John Johnstone, fondly know as JJ to our members has been an integral part of Foxhills for the past 10 years.

JJ joined in with our ladies’ roll up on Wednesday and managed to play a few holes with each group of ladies and we celebrated his retirement with a gathering in Bar XIX.
JJ has been hugely supportive of our lady members and rarely missed starting us off before our Pearson and Centenary matches, even to the extent of going to Effingham on his day off to support our ladies in the final of the Surrey Cup, which Foxhills won that year.

We look forward to seeing JJ round and about enjoying Foxhills from the ‘other side’ as a member!

Club Member of the Year 2009

Shirley Difrawy

Shirley Difrawy receives Club Member of The Year 2009

WOW !!

I must say that this award which was presented by our outgoing Captain at our presentations Day this year took me COMPLETELY by surprise, as you might notice from the look of shock on my face in this photo.

The award is always kept under wraps until the night and when Judy started to say ” and this member joined Foxhills in Spring 2001…” I was looking around to see who it could be that had joined the club at the same time as me, until ….the penny dropped that it was me!

I should of course have said a few words at the time but I have to admit to being totally lost for words, the true meaning of ‘speechless’.

So, I would just like to say now, thanks so much for the award, it really does mean SO much to me to be recognised in this way.

I have been totally involved with Foxhills since I joined all those years ago and have loved my various team captaincies and projects.

Being a part of such a competitive, progressive and successful golf club is fantastic and I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of all the successes we have had at our club, especially our Ladies Pearson and Centenary Bowl teams.

Over the past 2 years, establishing and running the Foxgolf blog is a continuation of my involvement at Foxhills and I look forward to being a part of the happenings at the club  for a long time to come.

So thanks everyone for my award, it is much appreciated !

Best wishes,

Shirley Difrawy

Ladies Christmas Lunch 2009

santa-JJThe weather treated us kindly yesterday at the annual Ladies’ Christmas lunch and golf day.

Although the course was quite wet and soggy the sun shone and the temperature stayed warm for our competition on Longcrosse.

The going was quite tough because of the soggy ground and the ball wasn’t rolling at all but the scores were quite respectable with the winning team of Linda Rich, Linda Anderson, Jane Walker and Sharon Puddle scoring an excellent 74 points.

The match format was a team of 4 players with 1 score to count on the par 5s, 2 to count on the par 4s and 3 on each par 3.

Surrey Ladies’ Champion

jane_walkerIn appalling conditions at West Surrey last Saturday 24th October, our own Jane Walker played a thrilling match against Jose Kellenburger of Camberley Heath in the finals of the S.L.C.G.A. Spring Knock-out.

In spite of Jane’s great play Jose never gave up, holing an amazing putt at the 16th to continue the match.

However Jane’ s power and accuracy told in the end as she was on the  fringe for two on the 17th while her opponent was short in three.

This is a fantastic  achievement  for our club and really puts Foxhills on the map.

Jane has had a superb year as captain of the successful Centenary Bowl team, winner of the Ladies singles, the Phyldon trophy with Richard, winner of the Ladies weekday singles and runner up in the Adult Junior with Conor Reynolds.

Well Played Jane – all that hard has paid off!

NEWSFLASH! Centenary Bowl comes back to Foxhills

centenary-bowl-ten-capt-medFoxhills Centenary Bowl team today won their matches to bring the  Centenary Bowl back to Foxhills !

The S.L.C.G.A. Centenary Bowl competition is a Scratch Knock-Out Competition between representative teams of five players of handicaps 10 and above with home and away matches in each round, until the final round. The competition started in 2000 and Foxhills have an amazing record in this competition, winning the event 3 times and being runner’s up twice in the 6 years we have been taking part .

Jane Walker was the captain this year and had a squad of ten players with handicaps between 10 and 13 to call upon for the matches.

The weather forecast for 11th October, the day of the finals, was for sunny weather but didn’t quite live up to its promise with most of the day being a bit grey and drizzly. However, the dull colour of the day was quite the opposite to the quality and excitement of the matches, played this year at Effingham Golf Course.centenary-bowl-2009

The quality of golf, as always in this event which is played off scratch, is very high and at this stage of the competition there is very little room for error.

All five of the matches were very closely fought and kept the spectators biting their nails until the very end with two of the matches, which were all square after 18 holes, having to fight on over extra holes.

As the final match drew to its nerve-fraying conclusion, our Captain, Jane Walker, held her nerve to win her match on the 18th hole !

All of the matches were played in great spirit, with Hankley Common, who beat us in the final last year, being very gracious in defeat!

Surrey Champions

Our super stars, Committee member Colin Smith and his partner our scratch champion, Jamie Puddle, won their semi final and then the final on Sunday at Hindhead. They are now the Surrey Foursomes Champions, a title we hope they will defend next year. This is the first time our Men’s representatives have been so successful and all credit to their fantastic play and commitment. It is brilliant to see our teams doing so well. Many Congratulations both!

Captain’s Drive In 2009

Sunday 27th September 2009

Captain’s Drive took place last Sunday on another brilliantly sunny day.

Our courses were packed, with the members who had watched our new captain, Dave Rogers, strike not one but four balls, if you include the football he kicked off the first tee.

A lifelong Brentford supporter he was guided to the tee by the club mascot, wearing the club strip identifying him as Captain, with his number “1”.

This was an opportunity for the entire club to welcome him and then enjoy a texas scramble in teams of four.

The winners on Longcross were The Puddles, playing with our handicap secretaries Mike Wraight and Hilary Hart, with a remarkable score of three eagles and eleven birdies.

His charity, Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, was launched with an introduction from Alan Burnett and the area fund raiser Claire. He has immediately raised considerable funds thanks to the efforts of the raffle sellers and the generosity of three club members who have each purchased a privileged parking space for a month at a time.
